Study ranks Australia most resilient country against global catastrophes

An international research team led by environmental scientist Florian Gien of the University of Hagen has identified the countries most likely to survive a global catastrophe such as a nuclear winter, infrastructure collapse or a deadly pandemic, according to a study published in the journal Global Challenges. Australia topped the ranking, with the researchers citing its island geography that would allow it to seal its borders during a pandemic, its food self-sufficiency and its developed resource and industrial base. The study also noted Australia's vulnerabilities, including its dependence on imported fuel and pharmaceuticals. New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland and Argentina were also placed high on the list, though each was described as having distinct weaknesses. The researchers said the ranking was not intended as a guide for an "elite escape," but rather to support the establishment of seed banks, food reserves and outposts designed to aid post-crisis recovery. The study grouped global threats into three categories: a sharp drop in sunlight, mass infrastructure failure and large-scale biological hazards. It assessed countries' capacity to maintain essential community functions and supply resources to their populations, identifying low social inequality, advanced industry, strong agriculture and independent energy as key indicators of resilience.
