Study finds global warming accelerating, with 0.35°C rise over decade

A new analysis has found that Earth's average temperature rose by roughly 0.35°C between 2015 and 2025, adding to the long-term warming trend driven by the accumulation of greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution. Researchers separated natural climate variability—including El Niño cycles, solar activity changes and volcanic eruptions—from the temperature records to isolate the underlying warming trend. The study calculated a statistical confidence level above 98% for the acceleration in global warming, according to co-author and retired statistician Grant Foster, who said the team worked to clarify the long-term trajectory by reducing these variables. The researchers described the findings as significant statistical evidence that the greenhouse effect is not only raising temperatures but doing so at an increasing rate. The results align with other research showing global temperatures have at times approached or exceeded the 1.5°C threshold. The authors emphasized that the temperature trajectory over the coming decades will depend largely on how quickly carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels are reduced. They said the findings underscore that effective climate action depends not only on cutting emissions but on the pace at which those cuts are achieved.
