Spain recorded at least 1,028 deaths linked to a heat wave in June, marking the country’s hottest June on record, the Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid said. The figure is nearly three times the 407 heat-related deaths recorded during the same month last year. Spain’s national weather agency reported that the first half of 2026 was the hottest such period since records began in 1961. Average temperatures in the six-month period ran 1.6 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms, the agency said. The agency added that the past decade has included the seven warmest first halves of any year on record, evidence that longer-term warming is continuing. No further details on additional measures or mortality breakdowns were immediately available.
