Four adults were taken into custody after 16 children were found in a rural home in Hamden, a small village in southern Ohio, local and state investigators said. The children, ranging in age from 1.5 to 18, were discovered in conditions described as severe; two were airlifted by helicopter to Level I trauma centers for serious injuries.
The suspects were identified as Gary Snider Jr., Gary Snider, Christina Snider and Elizabeth Snider. They have not yet been arraigned. Fenton County Prosecutor William Archer said the four are charged with endangering children, a second-degree felony linked to serious physical harm.
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson told reporters that the conditions at the home were unimaginable even for adults. Authorities have not confirmed the relationship between the children and the suspects, but said the adults did not reside in the area and had moved between locations. Investigators also ruled out human trafficking.
Hamden is located roughly 97 kilometers southeast of Columbus and has a population under 1,000. No further details were immediately available on the condition of the remaining children or the court proceedings ahead.
