South Iraq Sees Fatal Drowning and Armed Attacks Across Three Provinces

Basra, Dhi Qar and Maysan were hit by a string of deadly and violent incidents, including a 17-year-old who died by suicide in the Shatt al-Arab waters and whose body was recovered five days later. The case underscores the ongoing toll of drowning and violence across southern Iraq. The family said search operations were carried out daily, but the period was extended because naval officers were operating under limited working hours. In Nasiriyah city center, an 8-year-old child drowned in the Habbefeh River while learning to swim. In Dhi Qar, armed men attacked a place in the Sharquat al-Sheikh district where drug addicts were gathering, but no one was injured. The same province later saw an armed clash that left two people wounded. In Maysan, a gunman opened fire on a café in the city of Amarah, injuring two people before fleeing the scene. The attack added to the day’s violence in the south, where shootings and drowning incidents claimed lives and left others wounded.
