Serious subsidence has been detected in the earth approaches to Hamrin Bridge, Iraq’s longest bridge, in Diyala province after lake levels rose because of heavy rainfall. Officials said the bridge had to be closed again after being temporarily opened.
The collapse affected the approaches to the bridge, while the concrete blocks and bearings were not damaged. The issue has raised concern over the structure’s accessibility and the need for urgent maintenance.
The Roads and Bridges Directorate said it does not have the funds needed for repair work because of the financial crisis. The directorate said the bridge’s construction cost exceeds 60 billion Iraqi dinars.
Hamrin Bridge is more than 7 kilometers long and is a key infrastructure link in Diyala province. The damage underscores the strain on public works as weather conditions and budget constraints continue to affect maintenance efforts.
