Climate scientists have warned that the planet is approaching critical environmental thresholds, beyond which rapid changes could destabilize natural systems. According to the Daily Star, the Amazon rainforest, polar ice sheets and global temperature rise are all moving toward tipping points. Researchers said the changes are interconnected: melting ice would raise sea levels and threaten coastal regions, while rising temperatures could render large areas uninhabitable and intensify climate-driven migration. The decline of rainforests such as the Amazon would weaken natural carbon sinks and accelerate global warming. Emeritus Professor Will Steffen of the Australian National University said correcting the trajectory could take decades, while the window for avoiding dangerous outcomes is narrowing. Steffen likened the situation to the Titanic, noting that while five kilometers might be needed to slow and change course, only three kilometers remain before the iceberg. The report added that planetary temperatures continue to rise and polar glaciers are visibly retreating, while scientists warn that permafrost thaw could release long-trapped organic material and gases.
