Restoration underway on historic Zaviye mosque and spring in Duhok

DUHOK, Iraq — Authorities in Duhok province are carrying out rehabilitation work on a historic mosque and its associated spring in Zaviye, the provincial Directorate of Antiquities and Heritage said. The project is part of a plan to preserve and develop historic sites across the city, according to Directorate head Biks Rivfekani. The work is being carried out with support from Germany's GIZ development agency and in coordination with the Lotus Flower organization. The project is expected to take 40 days and will employ about 30 people, including university graduates, archaeology specialists and residents of Zaviye. Initial findings suggest the mosque may date back to the eighth century, though excavations and studies are continuing to determine its precise age. Officials also aim to protect the water sources connected to the site and promote archaeological tourism in the area. No further details on completion dates or funding were immediately available.
