Iraq media regulator urges Korek users to secure digital accounts

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Media and Communications Commission on Wednesday called on Korek Telecom subscribers to take steps to safeguard access to their digital accounts, citing the risk of losing verification codes if the service is disrupted. In an advisory, the commission said users who rely on their Korek phone number to log into or verify social media and digital platforms should add a backup number. It recommended that a second line obtained from a licensed operator such as Asiacell or Zain Iraq be used for verification and account recovery on apps that allow multiple registered numbers. For platforms that accept only one number, the commission advised users to change the verification line to a SIM from one of the licensed operators while keeping the Korek number available for as long as possible. The regulator also urged users to enable email links, authentication apps or other alternative methods, reduce reliance on SMS and complete any required updates before message delivery is interrupted. It said the measures are meant to provide alternative routes into digital accounts and are not intended to push users to abandon their current numbers.
