DOHA, Qatar โ Qatari officials have joined talks between Iran and Oman in Muscat over the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports. The parties are negotiating a possible declaration on the full opening of a central island in the strait to international waters and the free passage of maritime traffic, the report said.
Diplomatic sources cited in the reports said the talks envision sea transport proceeding without any restrictions. The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iranian and Omani waters, is a key transit point for global oil trade. Roughly 20% of world oil trade passes through the waterway, making it a longstanding point of contention between Washington and Tehran.
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea guarantees unimpeded transit through straits used for international navigation. Iran has opposed restoring the full pre-war order across the strait. No further details on the talks were immediately available.
