TEHRAN, Iran โ An informed source speaking to Iran's state news agency Tasnim dismissed claims that the Strait of Hormuz is subject to unilateral regulation, saying the waterway falls within the internal and territorial waters of Iran and Oman. The source said any decisions on the administration of the strait must be taken by the two coastal states.
Future arrangements for the strait will be shaped through dialogue between the two sides, the source said, and must be made within the framework of Article 5 of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding. Under that article, any future regulation of the strait is to be determined by Iran through coordination and dialogue with Oman.
The remarks come after reports about possible new arrangements for the strait prompted Tehran to restate its position that no process excluding the two coastal states will be accepted. No further details were immediately available.
