BABIL, Iraq โ Police in Babylon province announced Tuesday that a woman's death, initially recorded as suicide, was solved as murder after her family challenged the finding and authorities exhumed the body for further examination.
The incident occurred in Abu Gurek district, according to the Security Directorate, which said the investigation was conducted under the direct supervision of the provincial security chief. After the family objected to the initial ruling, authorities reopened the case and sent the body to the Baghdad Forensic Medicine Institute.
Forensic examination found no evidence of hanging, prompting investigators to shift the direction of the probe. Following evidence collection and crime scene work, police took the husband into custody.
The suspect confessed that he attacked his wife during a domestic dispute, causing her death, and then attempted to conceal the crime by staging it as a suicide, the directorate stated. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing to fully establish the circumstances of the case.
