Over 1,000 migrants wait outside overcrowded shelter in Ceuta, Spanish agency reports

More than 1,000 irregular migrants have gathered outside a temporary shelter in Ceuta, the Spanish-administered enclave in North Africa, as the facility operates well beyond its capacity, Spain's EFE news agency reported. Hundreds of people from sub-Saharan African countries have set up tents on a rocky area near the shelter, waiting for space to open up, according to EFE. Security forces are monitoring the situation around the facility, and the nearby beach is also filled with migrants. Earlier reports said dozens of irregular migrants attempted to force their way into the shelter without success. Tens of thousands of irregular migrants reached Ceuta in late July after crossing the maritime border with Morocco by swimming or on foot. Spanish authorities have not immediately commented on the latest overcrowding at the shelter. No further details were immediately available on plans to expand capacity or relocate those waiting outside.
