Oil spill from grounded tanker spreads 12 km along Oman’s northeast coast

MUSCAT, Oman — An oil spill from a tanker that ran aground off Ras al-Mirad in northeastern Oman has coated about 12 kilometers of coastline, the country’s Environment Authority said. The slick has moved southeast along a defined line toward open waters off the Misandrah governorate, according to the authority. The leak reached the shore on Wednesday after currents had carried it at sea for weeks, the authority said. Emergency response teams said they contained the pollution and prevented it from reaching Misandrah Island. Officials added that monitoring and containment work is continuing and that the oil at sea is being moved toward offshore waters. Coastal cleanup and inspection operations are still under way, the Environment Authority said, without providing further details on the tanker or the volume of oil released.
