Newroz to host league opener against Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in Sulaymaniyah

SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq — Newroz Club will host Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya on Saturday in the opening match of the Iraqi Super League 2026-2027 season at its home stadium in Sulaymaniyah. Club general secretary Teniye Hassan told a news conference that the league opener and opening ceremony will be held at Newroz's ground, calling it a historic sporting moment for the city because previous seasons have launched in Baghdad or Basra. Hassan said preparations across the city are underway ahead of the new season. Newroz has reinforced its squad with new signings including Zergham Ismail, Mehdi Kamil and goalkeeper Ali Kazim ahead of the match. The club is aiming to make a strong start at what it describes as an Asian-standard stadium, looking to use home advantage against Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya.
