New border crossing between Iran and Maysan to open soon

ILAM, Iran — Local authorities in Iran’s Ilam province said the Shelat border crossing, which borders Maysan, has entered the implementation and operation phase. The announcement came during a meeting between Ilam Governor Ahmad Keremi and the deputy governor of Maysan and his delegation to discuss border cooperation, according to the Iranian news agency Fars. Work is continuing on communications, fiber-optic, water, electricity and gas connections, as well as road construction at the crossing. Iranian officials said the gate could be opened on a limited basis to passengers and foreign visitors during the upcoming Arbaeen pilgrimage period after preparations are completed. The work is also aimed at easing pressure on the Mehran border crossing, which is used heavily during busy periods, the Iranian side said.
