NAJAF, Iraq โ€” Najaf International Airport has handled a sharp rise in flights ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage marking the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the airport said on Sunday. Airport official Musenna al-Talkhani said more than 355 flights had moved through the facility from the start of the Islamic month of Safar through its 12th day, carrying 82,509 passengers. Al-Talkhani said flight numbers have continued to climb as the Arbaeen commemoration approaches. On the 13th of Safar alone, the airport recorded 62 arrivals from international destinations. Airport management said an operational plan is in place to manage the increase in flights and passengers. Al-Talkhani said the plan is aimed at keeping the movement of arriving travelers smooth and ensuring the best possible service for visitors taking part in the Arbaeen observances. No further details were immediately available on the specific routes or airlines serving the increased traffic.
