NAJAF, Iraq — Muqtada al-Sadr, leader of Iraq’s Shiite National Movement, said on Saturday that attempts to portray Imam Hussein as a rebel against the ruling Yazid ibn Muawiya are unfounded, and he rejected that characterization in a written statement dated June 20, 2026.
Sadr said the Jaafari Twelver school does not endorse fatwas calling for unconditional obedience to rulers, arguing that such views conflict with religious, rational and historical principles. He described Yazid as a tyrannical ruler, making clear that obedience to him was out of the question.
Drawing on the Quranic account of Moses confronting Pharaoh, Sadr wrote that “persistence in wrongdoing and tyranny grants legitimacy to no ruler.” He added that resistance to oppression rests on shared rational and textual foundations and is not confined to a single faith or historical period.
The statement was issued as a written text from Sadr’s office in Najaf.
