Mexico Captures Los Reyes Cartel Leader 'Poncho'

MEXICO CITY — Mexican security forces have detained the leader of the Los Reyes cartel, a suspect for whom the United States had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. Security Minister Omar García Harfuch announced that the operation was a joint effort between the Mexican Army and ministry personnel. The suspect, identified as Alfonso Fernández Magallón, also known as "Poncho," is alleged to be the leader of the Los Reyes organization. According to local reports from Milenio and La Jornada, Magallón is linked to drug trafficking, vehicle theft, and extortion. He is also accused of involvement in drone attacks targeting Mexican security forces during the 2025-2026 period. The Los Reyes cartel is reported to be part of a larger criminal network known as Carteles Unidos or La Resistencia. Minister García Harfuch stated that following the arrest, members of the criminal group attempted to obstruct the transport of the detainees by blocking roads and setting vehicles on fire.
