Martinez Says Silva Omission Unrelated to Euro 2024 Leak Case

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said Antonio Silva’s exclusion from the 2026 World Cup squad was not linked to the tactical leak incident at Euro 2024, but to his decline in form last season at Benfica under Mourinho. Silva had been criticised during the European Championship for revealing the lineup early before the match against Georgia. Martinez said an investigation by the Portuguese Football Federation found the Euro 2024 episode was an unintentional mistake. He added that the squad decision was based on Silva’s performances, not the earlier controversy. Silva lost his place to Tomaz Araujo after his form dropped at Benfica. The defender was left out as Martinez shaped Portugal’s group-stage roster for the tournament. Portugal will compete in Group K at the 2026 World Cup against Colombia, Uzbekistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its first match is scheduled for June 17 in Houston.
