ERBIL, Iraq โ€” The President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Nechirvan Barzani, has sent a condolence message following the death of Norwegian King Harald V at the age of 89. In the message, Barzani said the late monarch served his country for more than three decades with honor, wisdom and humility, and expressed his sympathy to the Norwegian Royal Family and the people of Norway. According to the Norwegian Royal Palace, Harald V died at Oslo University Hospital at 06:35 local time after his health deteriorated. Born on February 21, 1937, he ascended to the throne on January 17, 1991, following his father King Olav V, and reigned over Norway for more than 35 years. Under the Norwegian Constitution, Harald V carried out ceremonial duties, including presiding over meetings of the Council of State and formally opening sessions of parliament. He had been among the oldest reigning monarchs in Europe in recent years.
