Kurdistan PUK, New Generation Movement sign 'Balance and Prosperity' agreement

ERBIL, Iraq — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the New Generation Movement signed a political agreement called "Balance and Prosperity," a step that could reshape power-sharing dynamics in the Kurdistan Region. New Generation Movement leader Shaswar Abdulwahid said the deal aims to change the governing approach in the Kurdistan Region and lift it from political and economic crises. The PUK leadership said the agreement is intended to restore balance to Kurdish political life and promote broader partnership in decision-making. Together, the two parties represent a notable counterweight to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the region's largest electoral force. Government formation in the Kurdistan Region risks turning into a broader struggle over the shape of the political system and control of decision-making mechanisms, rather than a straightforward negotiation over the number of ministries, according to regional political commentary. Past institutional mergers between Erbil and Sulaymaniyah did not erase polarization among the main Kurdish powers, and continued divisions could reproduce a fragmented political environment. Kurdistan Region citizens continue to face mounting economic and service problems amid competing reform promises, inter-party rivalry over influence and delays in forming the new government.
