The Red Church, situated on a hill east of Kirkuk, stands as one of the city's oldest Christian landmarks and a testament to the region's diverse religious history. Built in honor of Brother Tahmizkird, the site is linked to the persecution of thousands of Christians during the Sasanian Empire in 445 AD. The site evolved into an extensive cemetery containing centuries-old gravestones belonging to Chaldean, Syriac, Assyrian, and Armenian communities. Local tradition attributes the church's name to the blood shed during historical massacres, though some experts suggest the name derives from the natural red hue of the local soil. The structure suffered significant damage during clashes between Ottoman and British forces in 1918 during World War I. While limited restoration efforts have kept the building standing, it remains a critical site for researchers and the local population. Experts emphasize that comprehensive maintenance and conservation efforts are now required to preserve the historical and architectural value of the heritage site.
