Iraq starts rice planting and lily removal work in Diwaniyah

DIANIYAH, Iraq — Iraqi Water Resources Minister Muthanna al-Taymi said on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, that the city’s water allocations would be secured and support would be provided for irrigation projects. He made the remarks at a news conference in Diwaniyah. Al-Taymi said Diwaniyah has been included in the summer agricultural plan for rice planting. He also said the ministry began a large field operation several days ago to remove water lilies from rivers and canals. The work is under way in Dugara district and will expand to other areas, he said. Al-Taymi said the plant affects water flow and reduces the efficiency of irrigation networks. He added that coordination among local authorities, farmers and relevant institutions is necessary for the season to succeed.
