BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraq's Joint Operations deputy commander and head of the Million-Visitor Higher Security Committee, Lt. Gen. Qais al-Muhammadawi, has ordered an intensification of security preparations for the upcoming Ashura and Arbaeen pilgrimages, the committee said in a statement.
Al-Muhammadawi chaired a meeting at the Joint Operations Center in Baghdad attended by the chief of the general staff and senior staff officers. The committee said participants issued recommendations to ensure the smooth flow of pilgrims along transit routes, maintain security forces in their areas of responsibility and continue coordination with intelligence agencies.
The statement also called for coordinated measures with the Interior Ministry and the Civil Aviation Authority to ease entry procedures at border crossings and strengthen security in border areas. Al-Muhammadawi said Iraq has successfully managed large-scale religious gatherings in the past, adding that such events have drawn international attention.
The committee said assessments of the comprehensive security plan covering the Ashura and Arbaeen visits will continue as preparations move forward.
