Iraq security service seizes hundreds of rare artifacts, arrests smuggling network

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's National Security Service said intelligence-led operations across the country resulted in the seizure of hundreds of rare historical artifacts from six cities and the arrest of an antiquities smuggling network. The operations were carried out under the direction of intelligence units and with the approval of local judicial authorities, the service said. The confiscated items include original pieces from different historical periods and hold cultural heritage value, according to the security service. Security forces said the artifacts have been documented and handed over to the relevant institutions. Investigators said the inquiry is continuing to identify other members of the network responsible for organizing the smuggling of artifacts out of the country. Iraqi authorities announced that operations to protect the country's archaeological heritage will continue.
