BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraq's General Traffic Directorate has announced reinforced road-safety measures for the duration of Muharram, with additional precautions in areas where religious visits are concentrated, the directorate said.
Colonel Haidar Shakir Muhammad, head of the directorate's Press and Public Relations Branch, told the state news agency that traffic control around pilgrimage and ceremony sites has been strengthened to keep vehicle flow orderly and protect public safety. He urged drivers to follow the directions of traffic and security personnel, reduce speed when approaching condolence and procession convoys, and avoid parking in ways that obstruct traffic.
The directorate recommended using alternative routes during temporary road closures, keeping safe distances between vehicles, and giving priority to pedestrians. Drivers were also advised not to use mobile phones while driving, ensure their vehicles are technically maintained, and respect designated passenger and load capacities.
Muhammad said drivers in emergencies can dial 911, should not drive in the wrong direction on one-way streets, and must not stop in emergency lanes. The directorate said it stands with citizens and road users, adding that its priority is maintaining safety and public order for all.
