BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Iraq's Communications Minister Mustafa Sind said fiber-optic internet retains its edge over Starlink satellite service in speed, stability and cost, despite recent advances by low-Earth-orbit constellations. In a written statement, Sind said fiber remains the preferred option globally. Sind detailed the technical gap between the two technologies, noting that fiber connections deliver latency of 5 to 20 milliseconds, compared with 25 to 50 milliseconds for Starlink even in optimal conditions, with delays rising further during peak usage. Fiber networks can offer home users speeds of 1, 2.5 and even 10 Gbps, while Starlink typically ranges from 50 to 220 Mbps, he said. The minister also pointed to operational differences. Fiber cables, buried underground, are unaffected by weather, whereas satellite internet can suffer performance losses during severe storms and near tall buildings. Fiber upload speeds match download speeds, giving content creators and live broadcasters a clear advantage, he added. On pricing, Sind said fiber subscription fees are lower in most countries, while Starlink equipment costs remain high. He described Starlink as a transformative solution for rural and underserved areas, but said fiber should remain the first choice wherever it is available.
