Iraq opens river ferry service from Iran to Basra for Arbaeen pilgrims

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Ministry of Transport said the first river ferry from Iran's Khorramshahr port arrived at the Ashar pier in Basra on Sunday, carrying Iranian pilgrims traveling for the Arbaeen commemoration marking the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. The ministry said the new route is intended to ease congestion at land border crossings and provide a safer travel option during the period, when millions of pilgrims enter Iraq. The General Company for Maritime Transport said it mobilized technical and administrative resources at the Ashar pier to manage ferry arrivals and ensure the orderly movement of passengers. Officials said processing at the terminal has been expedited while security standards are being maintained. According to the ministry, the preparations were carried out in coordination with supporting agencies under the directives of Transport Minister Wahab al-Hasani. The ferry service marks the first regular river link between Iran and Basra aimed at handling pilgrim traffic during the Arbaeen season.
