BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Iraq's Hunters Association has called for an immediate nationwide halt to hunting, saying the woodcock remains in its breeding and nesting season. In a written statement, the group said field records show chicks still depend on maternal care, and urged hunters in Baghdad and other cities to follow ethical and legal rules to prevent excessive and destructive hunting. The association asked that hunting be suspended until the chicks mature, and that established quotas not be exceeded once the season officially opens. It said the use of electronic calling devices is strictly prohibited under both Iraqi law and longstanding hunting traditions. The group called on Iraqi hunters to safeguard wildlife and resist practices that harm the environment. It said protecting the woodcock population is essential to preserving hunting for future generations.
