BAGHDAD, Iraq โ The Iraq Football Federation has launched formal talks to extend the contract of Australian head coach Graham Arnold, a federation official said. The new deal would cover the Gulf Cup and the Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia, scheduled for September and January respectively, according to federation official Ahmed al-Musavi.
Al-Musavi said the federation wants to renew its confidence in Arnold after he guided Iraq to the 2026 World Cup, the country's second appearance at the tournament following a 40-year absence. Arnold has expressed a clear desire to continue in the role following the support he has received from the federation and fans, al-Musavi added.
The talks are addressing the length of the new contract and financial terms for Arnold and his coaching staff. Al-Musavi noted that Arnold's current contract expires at the end of the World Cup. He also rejected media reports that Arnold's agent had not received a response from the federation, urging media outlets to refer to official sources.
