BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Iraq's Ministry of Electricity has filed 440 lawsuits against individuals accused of making unauthorized direct connections to the national power grid, the ministry said in a statement.
The cases were recorded across the capital, with 350 filed in Baghdad's Karkh district, 40 in Rusafa and 50 in the Sadr branch area. The ministry did not specify the period covered by the figures or identify any of the defendants.
Officials said the legal action falls under current legislation and is aimed at protecting the electricity system from tampering. The ministry added that those responsible for the violations will be held accountable through the prescribed legal process.
The statement also said inspections would continue against anyone carrying out similar breaches, framing the crackdown as part of efforts to safeguard public resources and maintain grid security. No further details on the cases or any convictions were immediately available.
