Iraq debate over consolidating arms under state control continues

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A debate over consolidating weapons solely under state authority remains one of Iraq's most sensitive political files because of its direct link to security and stability, according to strategic affairs expert Ali al-Juburi. Speaking on the issue, al-Juburi said the government's success in implementing such a project would be a decisive step toward strengthening security and reinforcing the authority of official institutions. Al-Juburi warned that weapons remaining outside state control could carry serious consequences across security, political and economic spheres. He noted that the consolidation of arms under the state is a constitutional principle, with the constitution granting the use of force to official security and military institutions. He described the effort as a national project aimed not only at security but also at safeguarding the rule of law and state institutions. The expert called on the government to act through a comprehensive plan based on legislation, dialogue and national consensus, warning that otherwise illegal groups and actors seeking to destabilize the country could benefit from the lack of progress. He added that successful implementation would send a positive message about Iraq's commitment to security and development, both domestically and abroad, and stressed that aligning political and social positions is necessary for state institutions to carry out their constitutional duties.
