TEHRAN, Iran — BAGHDAD — Iraqi and Iranian authorities are carrying out work to activate and develop the infrastructure of the Hillat al-Shimali border crossing in Ilam province, near the Iraqi border, according to the Fars news agency. Officials say the new crossing is designed to expand bilateral trade and ease congestion at the Zerbatya (Mehran) crossing in Wasit province, which has struggled with heavy vehicle and cargo traffic.
The crossing is expected to function as a complementary route, helping regulate passenger and cargo movement during peak periods such as the major annual pilgrimage season. Iranian officials say significant infrastructure has been completed on the Javwar side, but full operation still requires final approvals from Baghdad, including the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and the Border Ports Authority.
Once operational, the crossing is projected to create new employment opportunities, support small-scale production and agricultural enterprises, and strengthen transport and services networks in border areas. Iranian and Iraqi experts have stressed that the project's success will depend on diplomatic coordination and the work of joint technical commissions, noting that commercial arrangements with the nearby Mandali (Sumar) crossing in Diyala province will also need careful planning.
