Spain extends border checks on Italian travelers; Italy cites Ceuta migration warning

Spain's Interior Ministry has reimposed temporary internal border controls at ports and airports for passengers arriving from Italy. The move responds to Italy's decision to keep in place restrictions on non-EU citizens arriving via Spain until Sunday. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office said Spanish authorities had warned on August 15 of a new migration push toward Ceuta, Spain's autonomous city in North Africa. Italy's government has said it will not review its decision until security risks or the prospect of a new migration wave have been ruled out. Ceuta's governor, Juan Jesús Vivas, has previously said that most of roughly 72,000 migrants who crossed from Morocco into Ceuta lost their lives, with 100 deaths reported in the incident. While most of the migrants later returned to Morocco, hundreds of unaccompanied children remained in Ceuta.
