BABYLON, Iraq — Police in Iraq’s Babil province have arrested a man in connection with the 2021 death of a woman that was initially recorded as a bakery accident, authorities said. The woman died from severe burns after the fire was originally attributed to an incident at a bread oven, and the case was closed.
Northern Babil criminal investigation units and forensic specialists reopened the file and determined the death was a deliberate killing. Investigators identified the victim’s brother-in-law as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant. He was taken into custody in a security operation.
During questioning, the suspect claimed he was not of sound mind in an attempt to evade prosecution. A medical panel at Al-Rashad Psychiatric Hospital confirmed that he was mentally competent and fit to stand trial. In a reconstruction of the crime scene, he confessed to dousing the victim in fuel and setting her on fire following a family dispute.
The Babil Felony Court issued its ruling against the defendant under Article 406/1 of the Iraqi penal code. No further details were immediately available.
