WASHINGTON, United States — TEHRAN — Iran's Foreign Ministry has told Washington that those who design and implement new sanctions must bear the consequences, in a response to U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a broad new economic sanctions campaign against Iran. In a statement, the ministry said the U.S. decision exposed the "rule-violating, aggressive nature" of such policies and argued that, having failed before, repeating them would fail again.
Trump said on his Truth Social account that he had given Iran a great opportunity to reach an agreement and that it had not been seized. He declared the launch of "the toughest economic operation ever imposed on any country" and warned of "great economic consequences" for the institutions, companies, airports and public entities of any state that provides financial or commercial support to Iran.
Iran and the United States had signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June under Pakistani mediation to end a war that began on February 28 and to launch a 60-day negotiating process. That negotiation track ended in August, after the United States carried out airstrikes against Iran in late July, citing attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
No further details on the timing or scope of the new U.S. sanctions were immediately available.
