TEHRAN, Iran โ Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran will consult neighboring countries on the future management of the Strait of Hormuz and the regulation of its shipping services. In a post on social media, Araghchi said he held a productive phone call with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi following a joint statement issued in Muscat, adding that Iran and Oman will continue a dialogue on the issue and that the process will be carried out in consultation with neighbors.
Oman informed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the foreign ministers of Gulf states that no transit fees will be imposed under future arrangements for the strait, according to the Iranian account. Rubio reiterated that the Trump administration will not conclude an agreement granting Iran the authority to charge transit fees.
The exchange follows remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday opposing any fees Iran seeks to impose on ships transiting the strait, including transit, insurance and other charges, and threatening to end negotiations with Tehran if such measures proceed. No further details on the planned consultations were immediately available.
