BAGHDAD, Iraq โ A Husseini procession known as the "October Martyrs" in Iraq's Dhi Qar province said it has cancelled its Ashura procession this year, citing concerns over public safety and the integrity of the religious rituals.
In a statement, the procession's administration said the decision was taken to protect the city's security and public welfare, prevent the exploitation of Husseini rituals and preserve social cohesion. The statement said the choice was not made lightly, but that public interest and community unity were placed above all other considerations.
The statement also blamed individuals it said were responsible for blocking the carrying of photographs of those killed during the October protests, accusing them of producing the current outcome. Local police sources in Dhi Qar had earlier said the procession was prevented from joining the annual Ashura event at al-Habubi Square in central Nasiriyah because it had insisted on carrying images of the October martyrs.
The procession, which has been registered for more than five years and operates under the instructions of the Dhi Qar Husseini Convoys Commission, had been preparing to take part in the Ashura procession alongside other convoys. No further details on planned alternative observances were immediately available.
