Iran: Details emerge of meeting where Shamkhani was killed

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's Nour News, linked to the Supreme National Security Council, has for the first time published details of the final meeting attended by former SNSC Secretary-General Admiral Ali Shamkhani before he was killed. The agency said the session was held on the first day of a 40-day war, hours before U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran began, to review a new security plan. According to Nour News, the meeting addressed the restructuring of security forces, the provision of additional equipment to manage domestic protests, and the state of readiness for a possible U.S.-Israeli attack. Two main items were on the agenda: the reorganization of resources, structures and personnel, and intelligence indicators related to an imminent U.S. and Israeli strike. The agency reported that Shamkhani had advocated limiting the use of live ammunition against protesters, a position that drew objections from some military-security commanders. It said the Defense Ministry-linked Shahid Misemi facility was tasked with developing equipment to control protests without resorting to lethal force, and that the facility was bombed during the war. Shamkhani was killed on Feb. 28, 2026, in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran.
