Investigation opened after detainee sets himself on fire in Diyaniya

A 26-year-old detainee set himself on fire at the Family and Child Protection Unit in Diyaniya, according to a statement from the Diyaniya Provincial Police Command. He was being held in connection with multiple cases filed by his family over alleged violence against his mother, brother and sister. The police said the detainee collected accumulated rubbish, set it on fire and threw burning pieces onto his body in the unit’s open area. The statement did not provide information on his condition. Diyaniya Provincial Police Commander Maj. Gen. Najib Mahmoud Sultan ordered an investigation committee to be formed the following day. He also instructed that the officer on duty and some personnel be removed from their posts while the investigation is carried out. The inquiry is intended to establish the full circumstances of the incident and identify any officers who may have failed in their duties for possible legal action, the police said.
