ERBIL, Iraq โ President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani condemned Monday's attacks on the office of Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the head of the Kurdistan Region Protection Agency, calling them a serious escalation. In a written statement issued on August 17, 2026, Barzani described the attacks as "completely rejected" and unacceptable, and urged the Iraqi federal government to act immediately within its constitutional responsibilities.
Barzani said all necessary measures should be taken to prevent similar attacks from recurring, and stressed that Iraq's sovereignty, security and stability are a shared national responsibility across the country, including the Kurdistan Region.
The Kurdistan Region president called on all parties to work seriously to de-escalate tensions and ease friction. No further details on a possible investigation were immediately provided.
