Inter Miami appoint Argentine Kily González as head coach

MIAMI — Major League Soccer club Inter Miami has appointed Argentine coach Christian Alberto "Kily" González as its new head coach, replacing Guillermo Hoyos, the club said. Hoyos moved from sporting director to head coach in April after Javier Mascherano resigned for personal reasons. According to the club, Hoyos will continue in an interim role until González completes his work-permit process. González will be unable to lead the team from the touchline in the next match against Montreal after MLS issued Hoyos a one-game suspension and fined the club for delays in returning to the field. Inter Miami said Hoyos had set the franchise's best start by a head coach through his first eight matches, but the team went without a win in its next five games, was eliminated from the league cup and trails Nashville by 10 points in the Eastern Conference. The 52-year-old González previously coached Argentine clubs Rosario Central, Unión de Santa Fe and Platense. Inter Miami, second in the Eastern Conference with 39 points, said his coaching experience and prior familiarity with Lionel Messi, with whom he played in 2005 World Cup qualifiers, were central to the appointment.
