Iran says regional security cannot be secured through the United States

TEHRAN, Iran — Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Monday that the Mecca Agreement reflects regional states' recognition that security can no longer be guaranteed through the United States. Speaking at a weekly press conference, Baghaei urged regional countries to strengthen ties, trust and security without dependence on external actors. Baghaei said there was no justification for treating an agreement signed by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan as directed against Iran, and he called for expanded regional cooperation. He asked neighboring countries not to allow their territory to be used for any attack against Iran and reiterated that Tehran rejects foreign interference in the region, adding that its participation in international agreements depends on national interests. On the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei said the waterway's reopening depends on field conditions and Iran's terms, and that Tehran will not permit passage while war continues. He described talks with Oman as constructive and positive, noting that transit fees had not been raised in the negotiations, though charging for services was natural.
