Two to three cups of coffee a day have been linked to cardiovascular benefits, according to a review of more than 200 studies cited by health experts. The research suggests that antioxidants and polyphenols in coffee may reduce inflammation and support vascular function, while moderate consumption is associated with a lower risk of heart failure, stroke and coronary heart disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends a daily caffeine limit of 400 milligrams for healthy adults, an amount equivalent to roughly two to four cups depending on brew strength and cup size. For pregnant and breastfeeding women, the recommended upper limit is 200 milligrams of caffeine per day. Excessive caffeine intake can cause temporary spikes in blood pressure and palpitations in some people, though moderate consumption is not considered to raise the risk of arrhythmias in healthy adults. Experts advise reducing caffeine intake or switching to decaf if symptoms such as palpitations, insomnia, chest pain or stomach problems appear, noting that safe levels vary with individual health status and sensitivity.
