WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump told supporters in South Carolina that he would be pleased to be nominated for a third presidential term if current rules were changed. "If these rules were changed, I would be very happy," Trump said, noting that the existing restrictions currently prevent him from running again.
The next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for 2028. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution explicitly bars any person from being elected president more than twice, and Trump is currently serving his second term. Amending the Constitution would require a two-thirds vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, followed by ratification by 38 states.
Trump had previously hinted that paths exist for a third term. In January 2025, Republican Representative Andy Ogles introduced a constitutional amendment that would permit three non-consecutive presidential terms. No further details on the timeline or prospects of such a change were immediately available.
