Gunmen attack Popular Mobilization post northwest of Kirkuk, one killed

KIRKUK, Iraq — Gunmen attacked a Popular Mobilization Forces position in the Taze Hurmatu district northwest of Kirkuk early on Sunday, killing one fighter and wounding another, security sources said. The attack took place at around 2 a.m. local time, the sources said. The dead fighter was identified as Ali Bahçat Hamid, while Cuneid Ismat Bahçat was injured. Security forces launched an investigation at the site and began a broad search operation to track down the assailants, the sources added. Hospital officials said local residents rushed to the facility to donate blood for the wounded. Officials said the security situation in the area remains sensitive and that inquiries into the motive behind the attack are continuing. No further details were immediately available.
