11-year-old dies after fight between children in Wasit, police say

WASIT, Iraq — An 11-year-old boy has died after being beaten during a fight between children aged 10 and 11 in the city, the Wasit Police Command said on Thursday. According to the command, the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, when one of the children collapsed after being struck and was hospitalized. Police said the families of those involved turned the children in at a police station following the fight, and that the required legal procedures were carried out before they were referred to the judiciary. A court subsequently ordered their detention. The boy, who had been hospitalized in serious condition, died on Wednesday evening while receiving treatment, the command said. The Wasit Police Command added that the legal process is being followed and relevant procedures remain ongoing. It also called on social media users and news pages not to circulate unverified information about the case.
