TORONTO, Canada โ Ghana opened its 2026 World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama in their Group L match at Toronto Stadium, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring the winning goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Both teams struggled to create clear chances in the first half, played in rainy conditions. Panama striker Cecilio Waterman forced an early save from Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi in the second minute, and Ghana failed to register a shot on target before the break.
The tempo picked up after halftime, with Cristian Martinez coming close for Panama in the 60th minute when his shot went wide of the side netting. The match appeared headed for a goalless draw before Yirenkyi's late strike secured all three points for Ghana.
