MOSCOW โ€” A Russian gerontology specialist has identified abdominal visceral fat, vision loss and time spent away from nature as factors that can accelerate cognitive decline, calling for protective habits to begin well before age 65. Andrey Ilnitsky said many people fear dementia but only turn to preventive measures after reaching 65, when earlier intervention would be more effective. He recommended regular monitoring of body mass index, blood pressure, pulse, cholesterol and blood sugar, with rapid correction of any deviations. The expert added that walking or exercise carried out with a spouse or group provides social interaction and strengthens the protective effect on the brain. He also noted that living in areas with abundant green space can reduce dementia risk by lowering pollution-related inflammation and oxidative stress. Ilnitsky said losing 3 to 5 percent of body weight can ease the effect of cytokines that damage the brain, helping reduce fat around internal organs. He recommended routine eye and hearing examinations, saying early detection can slow cognitive decline.
